Team Spotlight: Sam Miller

Some of us have dedicated our careers to the cancer field, some of us have dedicated our careers to helping people use technology to improve their lives and some of us just like helping people. We’re really proud of our work and our team here at Navigating Cancer.

Meet one of our Software Engineers, Sam Miller:

Briefly describe your role:

I’m a Software Engineer in DevOps; my focus is helping the company’s software run as smoothly as possible, and I’m asked to do whatever is necessary to accomplish that. I love this role because I believe that the work we do has an incredibly important impact on people facing one of the most frightening things they will face in a lifetime.

Where do you find inspiration?

I’m fortunate enough to have a loving family who inspire me to be as diligent and ethical as they are.

What’s your favorite technology and why?

If forced to choose, I’d pick hardware virtualization. It has dramatically changed the landscape of software development in a fundamental way.

What’s your favorite life hack?

Project Fi (Google’s phone service) is my favorite “Life Hack”. I pay roughly half of what I used to for superior cell coverage.

Star Trek or Star Wars?

I prefer Star Wars (except episodes 1-3) to Star Trek, though I enjoy both.

What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not at work?

I play a lot of video games that others would find boring; I prefer slower paced games that involve resource management and planning, versus high-speed games that reward fast reaction times. I also enjoy Ice Hockey–my favorite team is the Minnesota Wild.

Little-known fact about you that would surprise people?

I’ve lived in Minnesota, Indiana, Germany, Illinois, Maryland, Texas, and now Washington.
