Team Member Spotlight: Scott Berkley

Some of us have dedicated our careers to the cancer field, some of us have dedicated our careers to helping people use technology to improve their lives and some of us just like helping people. We’re really proud of our work and our team here at Navigating Cancer.

Meet Scott Berkley, a key member of our Interoperability Team:

Briefly describe your role:

I’m an engineer on the Interoperability team. We build tools to connect our system with the electronic medical records maintained by the clinics. These integrations use standards like HL7 and C-CDA when possible, but also require customization to accommodate the unique systems and data used by each clinic.

Where do you find inspiration?

I’m inspired by software’s ability to make things effortless that might otherwise be labor intensive and frustrating. We aspire to the standard of creating systems that “just work” so that the patients and their providers can focus on their own needs and goals. It is rewarding to help build a system that can earn that kind of trust from our users.

What’s your favorite technology and why?

TCP/IP is pretty awesome. Those are the protocols that underlie the Internet and make global networks possible. The combination of simplicity and power they’ve demonstrated sets the standard for elegance that other technologies aspire to.

What’s your favorite app and why?

I’m a big fan of Google Maps. I love how it leverages rich data sets to enhance my experience of the offline world.

Star Trek or Star Wars?

I’m more partial to Firefly (may it rest in peace).

What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not at work?

I love playing board games. I play with some friends locally, as well as travel to a reunion with college friends every year to spend a whole weekend playing. We do occasionally get in some quick games over lunch in the office… 🙂

Little-known fact about you that would surprise people?

I’ve built and slept in igloos twice.
