quoteBeing diagnosed with what was first an 'abnormality' then 'it's a tumor, we aren't sure what kind', 'probably low grade oligodendroglia', then 'grade 3: anaplastic astrocytoma with two chromosomal genetic mutation', and then hearing: 'we definitely won't be able to get all of it, but maybe we can get 75-80% of it,' was easily the most devastating news that I've ever received. The lack of certainty and lack of information caused myself and my family an unbelievable amount of anxiety. It was probably the roughest on my wife, who as a nurse was able to read between the lines of what the doctors were telling me. To this day, I continue to wish that I had access to the wealth of information that Navigating Cancer would have been able to provide during that period of my life, as my main sources of information was Wikipedia and google, which lead me to tons of semi-relevant information, but very little pertinent to my type of cancer, which is extremely rare.

quoteGrowing up, it was a fact that my mom was chronically ill and wouldn’t get better. But what frustrated me was that the system made it so hard to figure how to get the care she needed so she wouldn't get worse. Because my parents spoke only elementary English, it was up to me to make sense of our insurance, paperwork, and medications across her primary care physician, pulmonologist, rheumatologist, neurologist, etc. Instead of spending what was left of the precious time with my mom, I instead spent too much of that time on the phone trying to coordinate her care.

My mom passed away a few years ago, and I’ve always felt that the system failed her. I joined Navigating Cancer because I truly believe we’re creating a patient-centered solution that will help not just cancer patients, but all patients and their loved ones. This is my opportunity to take what my family experienced and actually do something about it.

quoteEveryone has a cancer story. Unfortunately most of us have more than one. My maternal grandmother died of breast cancer. My paternal grandmother died of colon cancer.   My aunt is a survivor.  My sister-in-law is a survivor.  Deep down I know that one day it will be me. I will be the individual sitting in an oncology clinic listening to a provider tell me that I have cancer and that this is my prognosis with each of these treatment options.  Through my role at Navigating Cancer I have an opportunity to shape how my care and the care of others will be delivered.  I can ensure that clinics across the nation are focused not only on the diagnoses and treatment, but also managing the impact of the care on my life and the lives of my family.

quoteBefore starting Navigating Cancer, I was helping my father sort through mountains of irrelevant information as he was coming to terms with his diagnosis of late-stage metastatic melanoma.
