Guidelines for Cervical Cancer Screening
I'm Becky and I'm the Community Manager for Navigating Cancer

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) updated their recommendation for women to wait to have a pap smear until the age of 21. The other age directed guidelines have not changed. ACOG recommends women get screened for cervical cancer every two years during ages 21 and 30, and every three years past the age of 30.

In the past women were directed to get an annual pap test. Do you feel the new guidelines for screening are adequate?

Tips & Suggestions

Before starting chemotherapy

Have your teeth cleaned and take care of any cavities before you start chemotherapy. Ask your dentist how to care for your teeth while undergoing treatment.

What is cervical cancer?

Cervical cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the cervix.

The cervix is the lower, narrow end of the uterus (the hollow, pear-shaped organ where a fetus grows). The cervix leads from the uterus to the vagina (birth canal).

Cervical cancer usually develops slowly over time. Before cancer appears in the cervix, the cells of the cervix go through changes known as dysplasia, in which cells that are not normal begin to appear in the cervical tissue. Later, cancer cells start to grow and spread more deeply into the cervix and to surrounding areas.
